A Kurume kasuri weaving studio founded in 1858 (Ansei 5) and based in Hirokawa Town, Fukuoka. It has the longest history among existing workshops and continues to preserve the traditional techniques of hand-tying (kukuri), natural indigo dyeing, and hand weaving, which are designated as Important Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Using no chemical dyes, it creates delicate patterns and textures through natural indigo and handcraft processes, maintaining traditional methods in the present day. The studio also engages in passing on Kurume kasuri culture and techniques through factory tours and indigo dyeing workshops.
Features
- Strength: Preservation of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage techniques (hand-tying, natural indigo dyeing, hand weaving)
- Strength: Unique texture created through natural indigo and handcraft processes
- Strength: Accumulated pattern design archives (“Aozu”) backed by a long history
- Strength: Role as a hub for cultural transmission through tours and workshops
- Challenge: Constraints in production volume and speed due to manual processes
- Challenge: Higher price range, making it less suited to price competition

Preserving the Essence of Kurume Kasuri Through Timeless Craftsmanship
We are deeply committed to preserving the three essential processes that form the foundation of Kurume kasuri—hand-tying (kukuri), natural indigo dyeing, and hand weaving. By dedicating time and care to each step and working in harmony with nature, we value the delicate textures and expressions that cannot be achieved by machines.
At the same time, we sincerely engage in our daily craftsmanship to carry forward the techniques and pattern designs (“Aozu”) that have been passed down through generations. We believe our role is not only to preserve tradition, but to pass on its value to the next generation, and we will continue to build this legacy through careful, dedicated handwork.
